Lyrics

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Take me out to the ball game
Take me out to the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack
I don't care if I ever get back,
'Cause it's root, root, root
For the home team.
If they don't win it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes
You're out
At the old ball game.

Information About Take Me Out to the Ball Game

"Take Me Out to the Ball Game" is a 1908, Tin Pan Alley song, the words were written by Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer wrote the music. The song was supposedly inspired by an older song called "The Baseball Polka!' from 1858.

American singer Edward Meeker recorded the first version of the song; a version which was later to be selected by the Library of Congress, as an example of a song that is "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant", for the National Recording Registry.

The song went on to become the unofficial anthem of baseball but famously, neither Norworth nor Von Tilzer actually saw a game of baseball prior to writing the song.

"Take Me Out to the Ball Game" or rather the chorus only, is traditionally sung at a baseball game usually during the 7th inning stretch.

Not many people know that this song was actually written about a young lady named Katie Casey and how she loved baseball. Baseball was not a woman's sport in its primary stages but as time went by and the game progressed - it became "sport entertainment for the family". But when this was written - it was rare to see women interested in the sport but young Katie knew all the players names and would yell at the umpires and sing "take me out to the ball game" to her favorite players!

This song was written in 1908 by a man named Jack Norworth. One day when he was riding a New York City subway train, he spotted a sign that said "Ballgame Today at the Polo Grounds". Some baseball-related lyrics popped into his head, that were later set to some music by Albert Von Tilzer, to become the well known baseball song, "Take Me Out To The Ballgame". Despite the fact that neither Norworth or Tilzer had ever been to a baseball game at the time the song was written, it is one of the most widely sung songs in America.

Here's the longer version that introduces Nelly Kelly

Nelly Kelly loved baseball games,
Knew the players, knew all their names,
You could see her there ev'ry day,
Shout "Hurray" when they'd play.
Her boy friend by the name of Joe
Said, "To Coney Isle, dear, let's go,"
Then Nelly started to fret and pout,
And to him I heard her shout.

"Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack,
I don't care if I never get back,
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don't win it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game".

Nelly Kelly was sure some fan,
She would root just like any man,
Told the umpire he was wrong,
All along, good and strong.
When the score was just two to two,
Nelly Kelly knew what to do,
Just to cheer up the boys she knew,
She made the game sing this song.
