Information About One Man Went To Mow

One man went to mow is a traditional counting song for children. Typically sung up to ten men going to mow a meadow, it is usually sung with increasing speed. It is often accompanied by a variety of different arm/ hand actions.

The shorter version is frequently used to teach children to count backwards (ten men through to one man and his dog). In some versions, the aside 'Spot' is added after 'and his dog'. Others add 'Wuff' at this point.

Unfortunately, the origins of One man went to mow are unknown. Like many other traditional English songs and nursery rhymes for children, both lyrics and music are typically listed as written by 'anon. / traditional'.

Popular on children's radio during the 1980s, the song was recorded as part of a nursery rhyme/children's song collection by Wally Whyton.

It was his recording that was taken on a bus to Sweden by legendary Chelsea FC supporter Mick Greenaway in 1981, leading to One man went to mow being adopted as a favourite football song by the club's supporters.

The song reappeared as a kids' counting song on the 'Twins' 2003 album 'Singing In The Twins Wonderland, Vol. 1' and is still used in many playgroups and primary schools to teach children to count today.
