Lyrics

Michael Row Your Boat Ashore

Michael, row the boat ashore,
Hallelujah.
Michael, row the boat ashore,
Hallelujah.
Sister, help to trim the sails,
Hallelujah.
Sister, help to trim the sails,
Hallelujah.

River Jordan's deep and wide,
Hallelujah.
Milk and honey on the other side,
Hallelujah.

River Jordan's chilly and cold,
Hallelujah.
Chills the body, but warms the soul,
Hallelujah.

Information About Michael Row Your Boat Ashore

"Michael, Row Your Boat Ashore" also known as "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore" is an African-American spiritual with strong historical connections.

It was first noted during an incident in the American Civil War in 1863; when, at St. Helena Island, South Carolina, former slaves whose owners had left the island prior to the arrival of the Union navy, sang the song while rowing across the water.

Witnessed by Charles Pickard Ware, a Harvard graduate and an abolitionist, he recorded the song in music notation. Consequently, the song was first published in the collection of spirituals "Slave Songs of the United States" in 1867.
