Lyrics

Jack Be Nimble

Jack be nimble,
Jack be quick
Jack jump over
The candle stick.

Jack jumped high
Jack jumped low
Jack jumped over
and burned his toe.

Information About Jack Be Nimble

"Jack Be Nimble" and is an old English nursery rhyme. The rhyme was first collected by James Orchard Halliwell during the mid-nineteeth century but a version had been recorded as far back as 1815.

Jumping the candlestick was believed to bring good luck, it was also associated with fortunetelling.

Another folk lore suggests the rhyme was connected to Yellow Fever (also known as the Yellow Jack fever), which people kept at bay by burning flames. Candles would be lit up at the bed sides of children to help keep the fever away.
