Lyrics

Slippery Fish

Slippery fish, slippery fish, sliding through the water,
Slippery fish, slippery fish, Gulp, Gulp, Gulp!
Oh, no! It's been eaten by an?

Octopus, octopus, squiggling in the water
Octopus, octopus, Gulp, Gulp, Gulp!
Oh, no! It's been eaten by a?

Tuna fish, tuna fish, flashing in the water,
Tuna fish, tuna fish, Gulp, Gulp, Gulp!
Oh, no! It's been eaten by a?

Great white shark, great white shark, lurking in the water,
Great white shark, great white shark, Gulp, Gulp, Gulp!
Oh, no! It's been eaten by a?

Humongous whale, humongous whale, spouting in the water,
Humongous whale, humongous whale,
Gulp! ? Gulp! ? Gulp! ? BURP!
Pardon me!

Information About Slippery Fish

Slippery Fish is better known as its given title 'Octopus'. The song came about after Charlotte Diamond began writing songs for her sons Matthew and Thomas when they were in preschool. Octopus was the first song she wrote.

The song quickly became a favorite among families and teachers who attended her earlier performances and workshops. In 1985, the song was first recorded on her first album titled "10 Carrot Diamond". The album won the American Library Association Aware, Parent's Choice Classic Award, and equivalence to the Grammy in Canada, otherwise known as the Canadian Juno Award.

Other than the original English version, two other translations were released. A French translation of the album was released in 1988. Followed by a Spanish translation in 1994.

Slippery Fish begins the song and is eaten by an Octopus. This largely accounts for the reason people began referring to the song as Slippery Fish.

The fish referred to in the song, actually refers to a sardine. The happy little sardine swimming about meets the unlucky fate of being eaten by an Octopus. A Tuna Fish then comes along and eats the Octopus, which is eaten by a Great White Shark.

The song ends with a Humongous Whale gulping down the Great White Shark. Today, this song is used throughout the country in preschools and educational websites. Overall, Charlotte Diamond has recorded a total of 12 albums.
